5 Secrets revealed from Open Serre Day 2025

Our Open Serre Day was once again bursting with inspiration for those who love to tinker in and around their greenhouse. Missed it? No worries, with these 5 insights, you can get started right at home, too.

1. Composting with coffee?!

Does your morning always kick off with a strong cup of coffee? Use the coffee grounds, along with kitchen leftovers like fruit and vegetable peels or wilted flowers, as a head start for your compost heap or bin. Always cover with a layer of dry material like dead leaves or straw to keep smells and mold at bay. Once the compost smells like forest soil, it’s ready to enrich your greenhouse beds. Your seedlings will thank you! Who knew your morning brew could do so much good?

2. From seed to sizzling summer harvest

Want to jumpstart your greenhouse season? Start early, in February or March, indoors or in a heated greenhouse. Use seed or grow trays so you can work at height. Our aluminium trays with PVC bottoms ensure good drainage. By mid-May, after the last frosts, your seedlings are strong enough to transfer to greenhouse soil. Wondering what to plant when? Consult our sowing calendar.

3. Euro‑Serre’s “serious greenhouse” service

Change glass, adjust a seal or install an automatic opener? During our workshop visitors learned how to give their greenhouse a refresh themselves. Missing a part? No worries. Every Euro‑Serre comes with 10 years’ warranty, and all spare parts remain available for life. Yes, even for models built nearly fifty years ago. That’s the power of durable Belgian quality.

4. A B&B for buzzing bees

Wanna build an insect hotel? Cut bamboo or elder sticks to size and bundle them with twine. Drill holes (3 to 8 mm) in a block of wood or tree stump. Or fill a terracotta pot with straw and hang it upside down. Before you know it, your first little guests will check in for a very charming stay!

5. Permaculture principles

Making the most of your greenhouse space and letting nature take the lead, that’s what permaculture is all about. Place tall plants like tomatoes or cucumbers to the north so lower ones like lettuce or radishes catch plenty of light. Pair crops that support each other (basil by tomatoes), use mulch to keep soil moist, and adopt a circular mindset: rainwater, plant scraps, use it all.

Another growing method you encountered at the Open Serre Day: MyFarm’s aquaponics system. It marries aquaculture (raising fish) with hydroponics (growing plants in water), allowing you to produce vegetables and fruit in your greenhouse efficiently.
