5 reasons to install your greenhouse in autumn

When your windowsill is once again filled with seed trays in February, the dream of owning a greenhouse starts to bloom. But by then, you’re actually a little late, especially if you’ve set your sights on an aluminium greenhouse. By the time you've chosen, ordered, received, and installed your greenhouse, the gardening season is usually already in full swing. At Euro-Serre, we know that good gardening starts with smart planning. That’s why we’re giving you 5 convincing reasons to order your greenhouse in summer and install it in autumn.

1. Your vegetable garden is empty

In September, you harvest the last of your summer crops. Without a greenhouse, your gardening season is pretty much over, leaving your garden beds bare. The perfect time to make room for a greenhouse. That makes installation not only practical but also timely: your greenhouse will be ready well before the next season kicks off.

2. Start experimenting with winter crops

Installing your greenhouse in autumn means your new growing season can begin right away, even in winter. Cold-hardy crops like Brussels sprouts, kale, lamb’s lettuce or winter purslane grow beautifully in an unheated greenhouse. No need to wait for spring to start growing. You’ll be putting your greenhouse to work from day one, even in the coldest months.

3. Overwinter tender plants

With an autumn-installed greenhouse, there's no more need to bring oleanders, citrus trees or other frost-sensitive plants indoors. In the greenhouse, they’ll be sheltered from wind and rain, ideal conditions for overwintering. Do keep in mind: it can still get cold inside. Don’t place your plants directly on the ground, but raise them on shelving. Use bubble wrap to insulate your tropical plants, or the greenhouse itself, and prevent frost damage. Better still: order a chimney panel with your greenhouse and connect a small stove.

4. Faster delivery

In spring, demand for greenhouses skyrockets, and so do delivery times. Order then, and you may face a wait of several weeks or even months. In summer, things are much quieter: fewer orders mean more flexibility and often quicker delivery and installation. That means less stress, and everything ready just in time for spring.

5. Catch the first rays of spring

While others are still deciding on their greenhouse in spring, you’ll already be sowing seeds. Your greenhouse is in place, the soil has been loosened and enriched with compost, and you can start sowing straight away. Spring favourites like lamb’s lettuce, radishes or spring onions can go right into the ground, giving you a head start for the season.
