Where should I place my greenhouse?

The location of your greenhouse is key to gardening success. Good preparation isn’t a luxury, it’s essential. Once your aluminium greenhouse is gleaming in your garden, moving it is no easy feat. That’s why we’ve listed a few important points to help you easily determine the ideal spot in your garden.

1. Orientation of your greenhouse

Without sunshine, your greenhouse is just a pretty frame, yes, even a Euro-Serre! Ideally, place your freestanding greenhouse in an open space bathed in sunlight. For optimal plant growth, align the ridge from north to south and position the door facing south.

Not enough room in your garden? A wall-attached greenhouse near your home also offers many benefits. It stays warmer, and you can easily nip in to grab a handful of herbs or veggies. Bonus: being in plain sight means you’re less likely to forget to water your plants.

2. Location on your plot

Your terrain greatly influences placement. A slight slope is fine, but a steep incline, especially at the bottom, is a no-go. It risks tilting the structure and flooding it during a summer downpour. Avoid placing your greenhouse at the garden’s lowest point, where water tends to pool. Unless you’re growing watercress, of course. Also consider other garden activities. Is your Euro-Serre right next to the kids’ football pitch? You may find yourself shouting, “Watch the glass!” more often than you’d like.

3. Provide shelter

Choose a wind-sheltered spot that still gets plenty of sun. Cold wind rapidly drops temperatures inside the greenhouse and slows growth. Ideally, leave 2–3 meters of distance from tall trees, walls, or hedges.

Trees nearby? No problem if they have deep roots and are located north of the greenhouse. But don’t place your greenhouse directly under them to avoid shade and falling branches.

4. Groundwork: a solid base for growth

A good foundation is crucial, not just for assembly but also for successful gardening. Soil quality makes all the difference. You can enrich poor soil, but reclaimed or heavily worked ground can be tricky. Assess the soil carefully before planting.

5. Think Practically

Convenience matters. Ensure there’s a power source nearby for lighting, ventilation, or heating. Water access is equally vital. Place your greenhouse near a rain barrel, well, or somewhere you can reach with a hose. Wall greenhouses benefit from indoor water and power connections.
