What is aquaponics? 

Aquaponics is a closed-loop system that combines aquaculture (fish farming) with hydroponics (growing plants without soil). Instead of adding fertilisers, plants are fed by the natural waste produced by the fish. The result is a self-sustaining ecosystem in which fish and plants work together in perfect balance.

How does an aquaponics system work? 

An aquaponics system relies on the natural interaction between fish, bacteria and plants. 

• Fish produce waste in the water.  
• Beneficial bacteria convert this waste into nitrates, an ideal nutrient source for plants.  
• The plants absorb these nutrients while naturally filtering the water.  
• The purified water flows back into the fish tank, and the cycle starts again.

You can then place your seedlings or mature plants in the growing towers before introducing the fish. If you're just getting started, choose hardy, easy-to-care-for species such as comet goldfish.
